Ricard sent this email today. It is great helping a guy that almost single handedly is making every trial in North County.

And all the El Camino Shop crew thank you thank you. The event was an all time over the top success. So many people, around 120, it was actually a management problem.

But what an impression, of the positive kind, it made on our land manager. We had some local home owners and some local hikers. They gave the mtn bikers a glowing report for trail ettique. Other then finding 6 inner tubes thrown into the bush there was no trash of any kind. What’s the deal with the tubes???

Your gifts were very appreciated and much needed. I went through 5 gallons of water and two flats of bottled water. The 60 burritos were all gone, a number of them cut in half to share. There was a good amount of information that was dispersed to the masses about the state of mtn biking today in SD. We will be having our awards banquet this month and our sponsors will be recognized there once again.

All future events will be judged against the La Costa Trail Day. La Costa is being used by us to take the local city trail coordinators and the head county trail coordinator on a tour to show them what we want when we say we need trail and to demonstrate the value of sustainable singletrack. I have already had the SD City Trail Coordinator tour it and he gives it rave reviews.

La Costa is turning people’s heads and it just keeps getting better. Thanks for feeding the effort. We will all reap the benefits and more people will want to ride when there are better trails close to home.

Thanks Rich

Yesterday El Camino Bike Shop supported a day of trail work at the La Costa Hills. SDMBA and Richard J. are very active in the area and more than 60 people showed up for the 4 hours effort. We will be working on the very heavily used Switchbacks. The work included repair of drainage features to keep water OFF the trail and revegetation of shortcuts to keep people ON the trail.

After the work, the workers noshed on Chipotle burritos and we gave away swag including Continental Tires, Sockguy Socks, and PI Jerseys.

The day started at 8am with Rich and others explaining about trail efforts around San Diego County, how to use tools safely and what were the goals for the day. Rich had posters of lobbying efforts he and SDMBA are doing in Los Penasquitos Canyon and Calavera Lake area. Rich is trying to keep a major portion of Penasquitos open and create a Mtn Bike Skill Park in Calavara. GO RICH….

They had over 100 people coming out to work on the trails. It was great to see so many people. After the work, everyone sat down and got something to eat as Rich did a raffle and quickly gave away all the swag that we provided.

Go to SDMA to see when and where the next trail day occurs.

If you do not know Richard, anyone that walks/rides trails in San Diego should support Richard’s efforts. He is creating and maintaining trails and open spaces across the county. Come out Sat and do a little work.

ECBS will be providing Swag for the event.

Dear Trail Volunteers
Jan. 10th we are meeting at 8:00 am for four hours of much needed trail maintenance on the very heavily used Switchbacks.
Our job will be to
1) Eliminate as many of the social trails as we can. The idea is show the mountain as small a footprint as possible.
We will attempt to replant native cacti, repair fence and other methods to discourage social (trail cutting) trails.
2) Fill in brake ruts that have broken trail tread encourage erosion and fill with water.
3) Create water bars , grade dips,& nicks. The trail was built long ago with very little water management incorporated.
Today the lack of water management is the trails worst enemy.
4) Repair the many in slope turns ( berms ) due to water damage. See above.
5) Repair sections of the trail that have been blown out and the trail has severely widened.
Work crews will be created so you will be with someone that has an idea of what strategy is best suited for the job.
